You can ride in a car from Coimbatore, an industrial city in the state of Tamil Nadu well connected by road, rail and air. Your chauffeur will take you past the town of Mettupalayam, and up scenic hairpin bends to the hill stations of Coonoor and Ooty. On the way, you might be so lucky as to see the leisurely working of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, huffing and puffing its way up the steep mountainside with steam locomotives, just the way it has done since 1908.
Past Ooty lies Sultan's Battery where Tipu Sultan, the Muslim ruler of Mysore, converted the ancient Jain Temples to a battery to house his guns. My Bungalow is less than 2 hours away by motor from Ooty, close to the town of Pandalur.
You could also make the three-hour journey from the town of Mysore, driving past the Bandipur and Mudumalai game sanctuaries.
If you choose to make an approach from the west through Kerala, Calicut - or Kozhikode as it is now known - is a convenient staging point that is well linked by road, rail and air. The picturesque two-and half-hour drive either through Nilambur or Vythiri, through elephant country and tea & coffee plantations, will bring you to my bungalow at Carolyn Estate where I am the Sinna Dorai.
